Island of Gozo - Albert MosesGozo is an island for a quiet holiday and offers ample facilities for walking, sightseeing, swimming, sunbathing and diving. It’s an island surrounded with small golden sand and pebbly beaches, full of colours, azure blue of the sea, golden yellow of the limestone cliffs, which during these months of winter are full of green patches. Gozo, as a tourist, resort attracts thousands of tourists each year. Because of its beauty some of these tourists decide to invest money on property and make it as their second home. Albert Moses, an actor, writer, producer and director, born in Sri Lanka and living in England, is one of these tourists. The first time I met Albert was in 1995 when he walked into my little shop in Victoria. One day he came to see me at work, at the Identity Card Office, smiling with one of his water colour painting in his hands. Joking, I asked him weather he is going to handle it to the office. The answer was yes, and he made his presentation. Now it has been there for 10 years. Over 30 years ago Albert Moses started working as an actor in India where he appeared in 7 films, ending up producing and directing the 8th one. He then moved on to Africa, where he made documentaries for a short while. In the U.K. Albert has been involved in a great number of diverse projects, several of which were venture films around the globe. He was one of the main actors in TV serial, “Mind Your Language”. Recently he was made a Knight of the Order of St. John. I asked Albert to give me his impression of Gozo and the Gozitans. He said that his first visit to Gozo was by accident. He was trying to go on holidays to Cyprus in 1981 and there was nothing available for the fortnight he wanted to go. His travel agent, a lady, suggested to him that he should pay a visit to Gozo. She told him that she usually went to Gozo and that she liked it and, “so will I….. I took her word and there I was”. Albert said that the first glimpse of Gozo, as the ferry from Malta approached Mgarr harbour he fell in love with the place. He stayed in a self-catering flat in Hamri Street, Ghajnsielem, few steps away from the harbour. The Grand Hotel, before the recent new hotel was built, was his meeting place. Here was such a cozy little place run by a lady called Maria. She is a wonderful person and it was a meeting place for foreigners living or coming into Mgarr. It was such a homely feeling mixed with the regular locals who go there. Albert said that he fell in love with Gozo, because it reminded him in his hometown in Sri Lanka. A simple life, happy people, so friendly and ever so helpful. He said that within a short time he had a big circle of local people as friends. So he bought an apartment and he been coming over four times a year. His circle of local friends has widened and feels quite at home. He said that Gozitans are of the same irk of his kind of people. He even wrote letters to the local newspapers about Gozo and has of course written a poem about Gozo which become his second home.
