Dun Guzepp Cauchi gave a lot to the village community of San Lawrenz, Gozo. He led an exemplary life of humanity and suffering, of a strong faith in the Eucharist and in Divine Providence. He gave advice to all who sought him.

Dun Guzepp used to implore the Lord to draw him closer to His image by making him share in His suffering and in the burden of His cross. He fasted daily and spent entire nights in prayer. He sought ways of increasing his physical suffering and for this purpose he used to wear the “cilizzi” – a coil of wire with bards worn round the waist.

The ways of God, those through which He leads those who follow Him, are indeed mysterious. Sometimes He leads us through trials of humility and patience that leave behind a vale of tears. Such trials were experienced by St. John of the Cross, St. Gabriel of the Addolorata, and in this century by Padre Pio of Pietralcina. These noted members of the Chirch were victims of malicious accusations and the disciplinary actions that followed. In some cases, the truth became known in the victims’ own lifetime; in others, only after their death.

The village community of San Lawrenz strongly believe that such was indeed the Cross that Dun Guzepp had to bear, yet without harbouring any bitterness in his heard towards those who accused him unjustly. Dun Guzepp sefferd and in his suffering his faith in God grew even stronger. This difficult trial helped to mortify even further his sincere soul, and to drive away any lingering weakness of the flesh.
