The chamber feels that it is vital that an air link between the two islands should always be in place to enhance the tourist potential of Gozo and to be of service to the people living on Gozo. The chamber encourages the authorities to seek a quick and lasting solution to solve this problem and is in favour of extending the current facilities so that small fixed wing aircraft can operate this service. It also hopes that incentives that have been given to low cost airlines operating from and to Malta are also offered to those companies wishing to operate a fixed wing or helicopter service from Gozo. Lino Vella, editor of the Maltese newspaper in Australia, The Maltese Herald, visited Bishop Mario Grech at the Curia in Victoria on Tuesday October 12th. Bishop Grech showed great interest in the newspaper and expressed his appreciation of the information and space dedicated to Gozo. He thanked the directors of The Maltese Herald for their contribution to the Maltese community for the past 45 years, providing a link for emigrants since 1961. On being asked whether he would be visiting the emigrants to Australia, Bishop Grech replied that he would take the first opportunity that came along, possibly in 2007/8. Mr Vella also called on Mr Speaker Anton Tabone, who had attempted to set up an Emigrants Office in Australia during a visit there. Mr Vella's visit encouraged Mr Tabone to try to set up the office that can accommodate the interests of all those emigrating to Australia, not necessarily those hailing from Malta only.
